A depression in the south-west part of the Bay of Bengal triggered heavy rains and cyclone conditions off Sri Lanka's north-eastern coast, leading to widespread flooding across several parts of the country, particularly affecting the northern and eastern regions. The floods severely impacted communities, displacing families and creating immediate challenges.
In response, the SSSIO Sri Lanka carried out a dedicated flood relief service activity to assist families severely affected by the floods. Guided by the principles of love, unity, and selfless service, sai sevadals worked tirelessly to provide timely assistance and essential resources to those in need.
From November 27 to December 1, 2024, the SSSIO team served flood-affected communities in areas such as Gemunupura in the Colombo District, Thavadi, Urelu, Chankanai, Ponnamma Village, Mariyamman Village, Pokkanani Village, Katkovalam, Punithanagar, Old Punithanagar, Kaligai, Thunnalai, Thirumalpuram, Point Pedro and Kanpola in the Jaffna District. Across these locations, over 4,100 meals were distributed, including cooked meals, loaves of bread with dhal curry, biscuits, and tea, to help families cope with the immediate challenges caused by the disaster.
Additionally, relief packs containing essential items such as rice, flour, dhal, soya, chili powder, sugar, tea leaves, mosquito coil boxes, candles, toothpaste, toothbrushes, washing powder, Dettol soap, bathing soap, matches, Samaposha packets, and biscuits were distributed to over 125 families, benefitting more than 370 people in Thampalakamam and Echilampathu in the Trincomalee District. Milk powder, sanitary pads, and diapers were also distributed to selected beneficiaries.
The preparation and distribution of these relief items were carried out by 30 to 40 Sai sevadals, who demonstrated remarkable efficiency and dedication in their service.
By addressing the immediate needs of flood-affected communities, the sai sevadals not only provided sustenance but also fostered hope and resilience. This initiative underscores the enduring value of compassion and unity in times of adversity.
